2 Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies who died in 2021 being honored with golf events

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – Playing 18 holes of golf this summer can support two Kalamazoo County Sherriff’s Office deputies who died in 2021.

One golf fundraiser is in memory of Ryan Proxmire, who was shot during a police chase and died Aug. 15. He was posthumously promoted to sergeant.

The other fundraiser is for Deputy Eric West who died suddenly of a heart attack Oct. 25. He also worked as the Vicksburg police chief for seven years.

“Our goal in both of these things is to honor our fallen teammates,” Sheriff Richard Fuller III said. “Eric’s sudden heart attack was a shock to us. For him to go suddenly, as he did, it was a terrible shock to our entire system. But no greater shock than the month earlier when our hero was murdered while on duty.”

The Sgt. Ryan Proxmire Memorial Golf Outing is at 9 a.m., Monday, Aug. 29 at the Gull Lake View Golf Resort, 7417 N. 38th St., in Ross Township. It’s $100 per person or $400 for a team of four.

The outing includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, a goodie bag and barbecue dinner from Charles and Darl’s.

The money raised will go to the Ryan Proxmire Memorial Fund. That money will be used for things like scholarships to the police academy, Sheriff Richard Fuller III said.

Proxmire was in a car chase with Kyle Goidosik, 35, when Goidosik shot him. Deputies continued the chase – not realizing Proxmire was shot – and shot and killed Goidosik.

The Ox Golf Outing in honor of Eric West is at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Pine View Golf Course, 52065 Pulver Road in Three Rivers. Its $75 a person or $300 for a team of four.

This outing has 18 holes of golf, a t-shirt and lunch.

The money raised from this golf outing will be donated to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office K9 Fund. That money is used to help pay for food, training and veterinarian bills, Fuller said.

Both golf outings will have a 50/50 raffle.

“These two people that dedicated their lives and their families lives to the protection of others,” Fuller said. “These were two of the most engaging professionals that anybody could tell you about. They were well known for strong interaction in their communities, all deep love of their community and their families and a desire to serve.

“It’s just a good thing that if people can come out, participate and support that kind of actions from the community guardians. That’d be awesome.”

People can register for the Proxmire golf outing by calling the sheriff’s office at 279-385-6130.

Registration forms for West’s memorial golf outing are available to print out from Facebook. They can be returned to the following businesses, where paper copies are also available: Mr. B’s Dairy Bar, 403 6th St., Three Rivers and Ed’s Basic Car, 2460 S. Sprinkle Road.
