AHSAA golf: Haleyville boys, Pike Road girls turn in top rounds on Day 1 of state tourney

Class 7A James Clemens golfer Jack Mitchell and 1A/2A Bayshore Christian’s Michael Heaton – both individual qualifiers for the 73rd AHSAA State Golf Championships – led the field by turning in 4-under par 68 scorecards on the opening day at Huntsville’s Robert Trent Jones Hampton Cove Golf Course on Monday.

Class 4A Haleyville had the top team score of the day with a 9-over 297 and holds a 31-stroke lead over Randolph in the boys’ event.

Molly Davidson of 7A Hewitt-Trussville led the girls’ competition with a 2-under 70. Huntsville leads Class 7A with a 13-over 229, 4 strokes better than Spain Park.

Pike Road leads the girls’ Class 4A/5A tournament with a plus-15 231. White Plains is second at plus-31.

Other team leaders on the boys’ side are 7A Vestavia Hills (plus-12) and Auburn (plus-14); 6A Mountain Brook (plus-13) and St. Paul’s (plus-16); 5A UMS-Wright (plus-17) and Guntersville (plus-30); 3A Bayside Academy (plus-31) and Opp (plus-54); and 1A/3A Elba (plus-48) and Brantley (plus-51).

The team leaders in the girls’ event are 6A UMS-Wright (plus-23) and Hartselle (plus-25); 1A/3A Mars Hill (plus-37) and Trinity (plus-48).

Jay Clemmer shot 72 for Vestavia Hills and teammate Ward Harris turned in a 73 to help the Rebels to the top spot in Class 7A. Auburn teammates Conner Jones and Will Stelt both shot 2-over 74 to keep the Tigers close.

St. Paul’s Buddy Fleming shot even-par to hold a 1-stroke lead over Mountain Brook’s Thomas Norris in Class 6A play. Both the Spartans and St. Paul’s have four golfers in the top 12 finishers of Day 1. Fifteen golfers are bunched under 80 after the first 18 holes.

UMS-Wright is up 13 strokes on defending Class 5A state champion Guntersville. Will Howard led UMS-Wright and Guntersville was paced by John Bruce as both golfers shot even-par 72. Pike Road’s Quincey Leonard was third with a 76.

Haleyville had three golfers in the top four with Hudson Lawson at 2-under 70, Jack Temple in second place with a 72 and Jack Lawson in fourth with a 4-over 76.

Luke Ferguson and Cole Komyati turned in 2-over 74s to lead Bayside Academy to the stop spot in 3A play. Weaver’s Nick Ledbetter, playing as an individual qualifier, shot 6-over 78.

Elba’s Jay Wilson shot a 7-over to help the Tigers to the top of the 1A/2A leaderboard. Teammates Collin Sauls had an 83 and Peyton McCart shot 84.

Grissom’s Grace Engel, who shot 8-under 63 in last week’s North Sub-State tournament, finished at even par on Monday to trail Class 7A Hewitt’s Davidson in the individual medalist race.

Frances Brown shot 1-under to help UMS-Wright to the top of the 6A standings. Hartselle’s Jinger Heath and Jasper’s Alley Beth Waldrop turned in rounds of 3-over 75.

In 4A/5A girls’ play, Pike Road’s Beka Yang shot 2-over and teammate Yvette Gaston had a plus-3 75 helping the Patriots to a 16-shot lead over defending champ White Plains.

Brindlee Mountain’s Ellie Cothran and Lindsay Lane’s Chloe Ruble are tied atop the 1A/3A leaderboard with 2-over 74s. Defending champion Bayside Academy’s Causey Thompson is a shot back of the leaders.
