Anderson’s Keaton Vo eyes gold high school state golf tournament

Anderson's Keaton Vo drives the ball from the No. 11 tee box during the first round of the UIL Class 5A state boys golf tournament Monday at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown. Vo, a Texas recruit, topped the individual leaderboard with a 67, and the Trojans' boys team was battling for first place after the first round.

GEORGETOWN — Keaton Vo is certainly making the most of his first and only high school season.

Vo, a senior at Anderson High School, cruised to the lead after the first round at Monday’s Class 5A boys golf state tournament at White Wing Golf Club with a 5-under par 67. He’ll enter Tuesday’s second and final round with a 2-stroke lead over Nicholas Canales of La Porte and Max Cavazos of Boerne Champion, and he’ll try to claim the first gold medal for any Austin school district boys golfer since Anderson’s Troy Matteson won the second of back-to-back state championships in 1998.

“I know my game’s good enough,” Vo said. “I’ve just got to play smart and minimize those big numbers. If I stick to my plan, I’ll be fine.”
