El Rancho Chico Golf Club Moneyball Tournament results tallied

The El Rancho Chico Golf Club held a Moneyball Tournament two weeks ago and the results have finally been tallied. The four-player teams had to decide prior to teeing off which holes each player would be assigned as the Moneyball in a four-hole rotation. The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club held a four-player scramble format for its weekly game. Each player was required to use two of their tee shots. Closest to pin on No. 11: 1, Linda Alworth; 2, Osterholt; 3, Cathy Edgar.

Table Mountain Golf Course

The Table Mountain Men’s Golf Club held a two-man, one best-ball format for its monthly tournament. A total of 78 members turned out to participate and earn player-of-the-year points. First flight winning team: Stuart Avrit and Michael Heath. Second flight: Aaron Rogers and Will Olive. Third flight: Kevin Pappas and Chris Davis. Fourth flight: Robbie Olive and Billy Rodgers.

Jeanie Lowe and Sherri Kimmelshue tied for first place in the Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club weekly tournament with a score of 41 in its “First and Last” Tournament, counting the first 4 holes and the last 5 holes, subtracting one half the players’ handicap. Joye Smith took third with a score of 38. Second flight: 1, Paula Rich, 42: 2, tie, Kay Kurdziel and Joan Bequette, 45.

Chico Traveling Couples Golf Group

The Chico Traveling Couples Golf Group traveled to St. George, Utah, playing four different courses, for its annual excursion. Art Gausemel took back his 2019 title, won by Denny Varley in 2021, in the men’s division, with a total of 100 Stableford points, in the best three out of four rounds. Others cashing in in the men’s division were: 2, Bill Stone, 95 points; 3, Chuck Lohse (now a Texan), 91 points; 4, Bruce Hubble, 90 points.

Karen Beckman and Connie Anderson tied for first place in the women’s division with 100 points each. Jeannie Stone took third with 97 points. Debbie Maderos rounded out the payoff spots for fourth place with 86 points. Unfortunately, the organizer of the group and its spearhead, Ted Blofsky, was unable to attend this year, but hopefully next year will be a different story.

Local High School Golf

The local area high school golf league held its final match of the season at Butte Creek CC and the Pleasant Valley team dominated, as was to be expected (at least by me anyway). Jordan Boles and Andrew Ma took medalist honors, each shooting a score of 76. All six members of the PVHS golf team were selected to first team All-League, which I’m sure is unprecedented. The team’s next challenge will be the Sectionals, and if the trend continues, it will be on to the State Championship after the Sectionals.

Junior Golf

Andrew Ma took third place in the boys, 15-18 age bracket, in a recent US Kids sanctioned tournament held at Swenson Park GC in Stockton. Amy Na won took first in the girls, 15-18 division, in the same tournament.

In Memoriam

The El Rancho Chico Golf Club and the golfing community, in general, lost one of its longtime members, a stalwart and hero to those that enjoy competitive golf. Don Cummings passed away at the age of 94, just a year after achieving his 6th hole-in-one. Don was devoted to the Bidwell Park Golf Course and was a founding member (No. 76) of the El Rancho Chico Golf Club. I personally had the good fortunate to participate in golf tournaments with Don; i.e. the Wilcox Open in Red Bluff and the Mid Valley Seniors at Bidwell. Don was the recipient of many wins, and/or one of the top three finishers, in so many of the Bidwell and Chico SIR’s tournaments, that it’s too long to list. Don was a strong competitor, fair to the bone, and an idol to all of us that enjoyed his camaraderie and competitive spirit on the course. He will be sorely missed by all.
