Islander Golf Team Picks Up Key Win Over Scripps Ranch | Coronado Sports

The Islander Golf team was back in action yet again this week. With the number of matches remaining this season continuing to wind down, it was imperative that the Islanders build off their three-match winning streak and keep their stroke differential low with CIF Playoffs looming just on the horizon.

For the first match of the week, Coronado would go up against Pacific Ridge Academy in what would be a showdown of the No.1 and No.2 teams in the CIF Division III at the Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad. Playing the front-nine on the blue tees, the course played a bit long at 6591 yards and a slope of 139. So, playing a new and challenging course, the Islanders would undoubtedly be tested. So, how did they fare?

Finishing with the best score of the day for the Islanders was Inigo Izuzquiza. The senior yet again led the way for Coronado by carding a two-over par round of 39. Easton Phillips was just behind Izuzquiza, who continued his 2022 season with a round of 41. Tailing Phillips would be the combination of Diego Vargas and Mateo Sumner, who both turned in rounds of 42. The final two tallies on the day would be from Liam Weaver, who shot a 44, and Jake McLaughlin who carded a round of 45.

In total, the Islanders would combine for a score of 209, which considering this was the first time many on the team had played this course, was a more than respectable round. However, Pacific Ridge would come out on top as their combined score would be 197, giving them the 12-stroke margin of victory.

While the loss was one that the Islanders would have rather avoided, it was fortunately versus a non-league opponent and would not have any ripple effect on the final Western League standings.

Following the loss, the Islanders would return to action the next day to take on league opponent Scripps Ranch High School, a team they had handily beaten on the road just three days prior. Now back at their home course Coronado Municipal, it would be interesting to see if they could put on the same dominant performance.

Posting the top scores of last Tuesday’s rounds for Coronado would be sophomore Weaver, as the young gun would turn in his best round of the 2022 season with a one-under-par 35. A massive boost for the Islanders. However, Weaver would not be the Islanders setting a season-best as Eduardo Maynez would also clock in at one-under-par 35. With two-under-par rounds, the Islanders were well on their way to a victory, but the quality rounds would continue to roll in.

Both Vargas and Izuzquiza would be right on the tails of their Islander teammates Weaver and Maynez as they would card rounds of one-over-par 37. Also carding a high-quality round would be Sumner, as he would post a two-over-par round of 38. The day’s final score would come from Syrak Nemer as he turned in a fine final score of 40. With the flurry of low rounds on the day, the Islanders would easily pick up the league win over Scripps Ranch by the final score of 182-216.

The Islander’s record now sits at 14-6 with a league record of 4-3. This week, they will return to action with a home league match vs. La Jolla on April 26th and then for a road match versus Olympian on April 28.
