Men’s Golf Ends Season at PGA Works Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – North Carolina A&T men’s golf finished a memorable 2021-22 season on Wednesday at the par-72, 7,157-yard Union League Liberty Hill golf course. 

The Aggies finished in a tie for seventh at the 2022 PGA Works Collegiate Championships with a 65-over 921. A&T shot a third-round 19-over 307. 

Howard University won the tournament by firing off a three-round 26-over 882. The Bison shot a 1-under 287 to outlast Chicago State, scoring a 27-over 883 for the tournament with an equally impressive third-round 1-under. 

Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama State finished in a tie for third as both teams shot a 38-over 894, with Pine Bluff shooting a third-round 14-over and the Hornets posting a third-round 1-over. 

Senior Diego Gonzalez led the Aggies over the 54-hole tournament by shooting a 13-over 227. He carded a final-round 6-over 78. Gonzalez, who won two Big South Conference men’s golf player of the week honors this season, finished in 19th place. 

The Howard duo of Gregory Odum Jr. and Everett Whiten Jr. finished 1,2 individually. Odum won the tournament with a 6-under 208, and his teammate placed second with a 2-under 212. The Chicago State duo of Kevin Bullington and Kieran Hogarth finished 3,4, with Bullington shooting a 1-over 215 and Hogarth carding a 3-over 217. Pine Bluff’s Patrick Mwendapole rounded out the top-5 with a 4-over 218. 

Gonzalez closed out the season with one birdie on his card Wednesday. He started the day with a par on the 372-yard, par-4 first hole. Then, after a bogey on the par-4 second, he parred his three holes before bogeying two more holes on his front nine to finish with a 39. 

The back nine started with a par for Gonzalez before he birdied the 445-yard, par-4, 11th to move to 2-over for the day. He was 1-over on the back nine before a double bogey on 16. Gonzalez finished the season with two pars and finished the back nine with a 39. 

Senior Diego Sanchez had one birdie during the final round. After shooting a 39 on the front nine, he parred the first two holes on the back nine. Sanchez did bogey the 12th but parred the next three holes before birdieing the 573-yard, par-5 16th to move to even par on the back nine. He closed the season with two straight pars and finished in a tie for 28th. 

Sophomore Anthony Ford Jr. finished the third round with a 5-over 77. He carded a 234 for the tournament. On Wednesday, he shot a 38 on the front nine with seven pars. Ford started the back nine with a double bogey and a bogey on the first two holes before carding pars on the final seven holes. 

Senior Xavier Williams and sophomore Martin Gutierrez also closed their 2021-22 seasons on Wednesday. Williams shot a three-round 236, and Gutierrez led the Aggies with five birdies on the day. Gutierrez shot an impressive 33 on the front nine, with all five of his birdies coming on the front nine.
