More players from Houston area picked in NFL Draft than 44 states

Twelve players from Houston-area high schools were picked in last weekend’s NFL Draft, which makes it clearly one of the most talented cities, but also gives the area more draftees than than any state except Texas (32), Georgia (30), California (22), Florida (21), Ohio (13) and Alabama (12).

Klein Collins High School alone, which had Texas A&M running back Isaiah Spiller and Cal linebacker Cameron Goode both get picked, had more draftees than 19 states.

For transparency’s sake, we’re defining “Houston area” as anything within 100 miles of downtown, so that means we’re claiming Galveston Ball’s Zyon McCollum, Hempstead’s Delarrin Turner-Yell and Silsbee’s Kalon Barnes, but we’re not total cheaters. We left off former Victoria West star quarterback Bailey Zappe, who got drafted in the fourth round by the New England Patriots, but Victoria was a little too far – even for us – to claim him as one of our own. Even if you decide Galveston, Hempstead and Silsbee shouldn’t be counted as “Houston area” – look at you, Just Brittany – that still would give Houston nine draftees, which would be more than all but nine states.

Besides the 12 draft picks, there also were eight more local guys who were signed after the draft as free agents and two more invited to a team’s minicamp.

Here’s a look at where all the local players ended up in the draft or where they signed after the draft …
