Nate Deziel Wins Summit League Men’s Golf Individual Title, Bison Finish 2nd

NEWTON, Kan. – Nate Deziel became the first North Dakota State men’s golfer to claim the Summit League Individual Championship on Tuesday, finishing with a championship-record score of 203 (-13) to win the event by five shots.
Deziel closed his record-setting week with a 70 (-2) to post his third consecutive round under par, as he led the Bison to within one shot of forcing a playoff with Denver (-14), as NDSU finished second overall (-13). Deziel also earned an automatic bid to play in the NCAA Regionals as an individual with his victory.
Deziel’s 54-hole tournament score of -13 topped the previous Summit League Championship record of 205 set by IUPUI’s Michael Davan in 2012. Deziel’s -13 also broke the Bison 54-hole record, previously held by Van Holmgren with a -11 at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in October of 2019.
After starting with a bogey, Deziel had three birdies in the next four holes to jump to -2. He then recorded six consecutive pars before a bogey at 12. However, Deziel would record five more pars and a birdie at 16 to get back to -2.
The Bison started the day three shots back of Denver and tied for the best team round of the day with a 286. NDSU gained two strokes on Denver, who shot an even-par round of 288 to hold off the Bison. The second-place finish is the best for the Bison since winning the title in 2018.
Brock Winter and Nate Adams would finish in a tie for 12th overall and second for NDSU as both golfers finished at +1 for the tournament. Winter had four birdies to help him card an even par round of 72 on the final day. Adams had two birdies and finished at +1 with a 73.
Jack Johnson rounded out the scoring for NDSU on Tuesday as he finished with three birdies to card a 71, his best round of the tournament. Johnson was one of the biggest movers on the day as he climbed 12 spots to finish in a tie for 28th overall at +9.
Ian Simonich wrapped up the day for NDSU with a +2 round of 74. The freshman had two birdies on the final day and finished in a tie for 22nd at +5.
With Deziel’s victory, he will continue the NDSU season as an individual at the NCAA Regionals. He will be the first Bison to compete in the NCAA postseason since the team qualified in May of 2018 after claiming the 2018 Summit League Team Championship. The selection show for the men’s golf Division I National Championships will be May 4.
