Eddie Howe gave a brief transfer update following Newcastle United’s opening-day win over Nottingham Forest. Elsewhere, Alan Shearer gave his verdict while Callum Wilson outlined his World Cup ambition.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for August 6.

Howe’s transfer update

Eddie Howe hailed his Newcastle United stars after an opening day win over Nottingham Forest. The Magpies pulled off a 2-0 win over the newly promoted side thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson.

And when quizzed about the transfer market Howe said: “We’ve got a few weeks left to try to get the right player that will make a difference for us.”

Wilson’s World Cup dream

Callum Wilson says Newcastle United won’t get “carried away” by their winning start to the Premier League season – but feels the Magpies showed their class against Nottingham Forest.

In a big year for Wilson, he was also asked about the World Cup finals in Qatar. He said: “I back myself, I want to go the World Cup so it’s about hitting the ground running. I’m disappointed I didn’t score more.

Shearer’s verdict

Alan Shearer named Bruno Guimaraes as his man of the match as Newcastle United began their season with a comfortable win over Nottingham Forest. Goals from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson were enough to seal a 2-0 victory for Eddie Howe’s side in a dominant display against the newly-promoted outfit.

However, Newcastle legend Shearer named Guimaraes as his top performer as he took to social media to celebrate the victory. The Brazil international was forced to wait for his opportunity following his January arrival, but is now one of the first names on Eddie Howe’s teamsheet following a scintillating finish to last season.

Sutton questions Maddison bids

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton is puzzled over Newcastle United’s attempt to sign James Maddison. Leicester City have rejected two bids for the 25-year-old, with the Magpies falling short of a reported £60million asking price.

Newcastle are yet to make a third offer for Maddison but Foxes’ boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted they could be helpless to keep the midfielder should Toon chiefs increase their bid. Luring a star player from one of their direct rivals would be a statement of intent from United.

Notebook

Eddie Howe put pen to paper on a deal that could take him way beyond the initial 2024 expiry date of the contract he signed back in November last year.

United’s owners have been keen to put the finishing touches to an extension for Howe since the tail end of last season when he guided Newcastle to safety with plenty of time to spare. But those talks have continued over the summer and with new sporting director Dan Ashworth concurring on the consortium’s view that Howe should be handed a new deal, the club wanted to put the idea to incoming CEO Darren Eales too.

Eales is eagerly anticipating the chance to work with Howe and work is already under way for the years ahead. And on the recruitment front, Howe knows that he will not only get the players he needs – one way or another – in this window, he can rest assured scouts are already identifying targets for both January and the main summer window in 2023.
