NFL schedule 2022: 3 Eagles things to watch this week as 17-game slate is revealed

As the Major League Baseball season rolls on and the NBA playoffs are in high gear with the final eight teams playing in the second round, there is a lot of anticipation about a list of dates and times that will be released later this week.

The Eagles will be one of the 32 teams eagerly anticipating the announcement of the NFL schedule, finding out when and where they will travel to this season, one they hope will finish better than the 9-8 record they posted last season.

Besides the six games they have scheduled against their NFC division opponents, the Eagles will have some intriguing matchups, potentially impacting the NFL schedule.

Here are three things to watch for when the schedule is released later this week:

Watching how many prime-time games the Eagles will play

After a 4-11-1 record in 2020, the Eagles had three scheduled prime-time games heading into the season last year, which later became four after their Week 15 game against the Washington Commanders was moved to a Tuesday night affair because of a Commanders COVID-19 outbreak.

Now, after making the playoffs last season, the Eagles are in line to potentially get a couple more games. The Eagles’ addition of wide receiver A.J. Brown, the marketability of quarterback Jalen Hurts, and the Eagles being in the fourth-largest market make the Eagles attractive to networks. Some matchups that could wind up on Thursday, Sunday, or Monday nights include games against the Dallas Cowboys, the Arizona Cardinals and the Commanders.

One thing that could limit the number of prime-time games is the potential matchups in the AFC and NFC West and the quarterbacks out there, including Russell Wilson with the Denver Broncos and Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs.

When the Eagles play their reunion games

Based on how the teams are rotated for scheduling purposes and the moves the Eagles have made over the past two seasons, the Eagles will face some familiar faces next season. The Eagles will face Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz twice next season after their former first-round draft pick was traded from the Indianapolis Colts to the Commanders this offseason.

The Eagles will also have a chance to face Doug Pederson, the coach who led the team to their first Super Bowl victory, when the team faces the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field. The other reunion will be when Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni heads back to Indianapolis to take on his mentor, former Eagles offensive coordinator, and current Colts head coach Frank Reich. Emotions for all three games could be high, given the storylines.

When the bye week happens

Last season, the Eagles had one of the latest bye weeks in the league, not getting their week off until Week 14. There are varying theories on whether a late or early bye week is more beneficial, but for the players’ sake, toward the middle of the season to allow the team to get in a flow early but get rest at an important time before making a stretch run.
