ADRIAN — Tecumseh boys golf made it three-straight Lenawee County championships Monday at The Hills of Lenawee while a freshman was the individual medalist for the second-straight year.
Tecumseh, which won the 2019 title and in 2021 with the 2020 season canceled due to the pandemic, and Madison each shot 349 with Tecumseh taking the tiebreaker via the fifth player score. Adrian was right with Tecumseh and Trojans all day, finishing third by two shots (351).
Blissfield took fourth (378) followed by Hudson (381), Clinton (390), Lenawee Christian (398), Britton Deerfield (414), Sand Creek (428), Addison (444), Onsted (451) and Morenci (465).
“We have six guys who are very solid,” said Tecumseh head coach Cody Meinert. “We had a playoff yesterday to see who was going to be the fifth guy today. Either guy, whichever one it was, we’d be confident in. It goes to show that every stroke counts.”
Grant Simpson was the one who earned the final spot and, while his score of 100 didn’t count toward the team total, it gave Tecumseh the title.
Joe Nowak paced the team with a 78, followed by Aldo Barba (88), Blake LaJiness (89) and Ryder Zajac (94).
“They played well and battled,” Meinert said. “This was the first time many of them have played a full 18 here. This is the third tournament they’ve won so far this year. We just want to keep the ball rolling.”
Playing with the champions shot for shot was Madison.
The Trojans were led by Cameron Bozyk as he carded a 79 while Chris Lamprecht-Carson shot an 86, Mario Garcia shot an 89 and Jayden Holly shot a 95. Morgan Vanderlaan shot 113 as Madison’s fifth player.
Leading all 60 players on the links was Blissfield freshman Anthony Mingione.
The Royals’ youngster carded a 77, beating out last year’s champion, Adrian sophomore Carson Ritz, and Nowak by a single stroke.
“It feels good,” Mingione said. “It’s a win. It’s just high school golf and having fun with it and having fun with the team.”
Mingione battled through a tough start and got into a bit of rhythm to claim the title as county champion.
“At first my swing felt terrible,” he said. “I figured it out and the short game was pretty good. I had a couple pretty bad chips here and there, but putting was really good today.”
Behind Mingione, Ritz and Nowak was Bozyk in fourth, followed by Adrian freshman Cayden Staib (80), Blissfield junior Elliot Strahan (83), Lamprecht-Carson and Britton Deerfield sophomore Logan Shiels each shot 86 and Barba (88) took ninth.
LaJiness, Clinton’s Jacob Rothman and Garcia all tied for 10th at 89 with LaJiness winning a playoff with Garcia taking 11th and Rothman finishing 12th.
Adding to the Royals score behind Mingione and Strahan was Pierce Swartz (103) and Owen Smith and Trey Bris-Bois each shooting 115.
Logan Willis led Hudson with a 91 while Austin Marry shot 92, Gabe Loop shot 93 and Kodie Kirkland shot 105.
Rothman paced the Redwolves with Ethan Younts (95), Kent McCombs (102) and George Ames (104) adding to the total.
LCS, which followed up the county meet by heading to Battle Creek for a South Central Athletic Association, was led by Brogan Winder’s 93 while Nick Stuart shot 99, Jacobus Kegerreis shot 102 and Connor Parisien shot 104.
