The Floresville Tigers benefited from two stellar pitching performances from Brandon Cardenas and Brooks Farrell, to defeat the Kennedy Rockets to win their Bi-District baseball playoff series last weekend, May 6-7.
The Tigers started out quickly on Friday evening as Preston Freeman hit a triple and came in to score on Nadar Gulamhusein’s RBI single in the first inning. In the third inning, Gulamhusein scored on an RBI single by Kaeden Angle. Jacob Villarreal scored the final run in the fourth inning, after he reached base on a triple and crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Cardenas shut out the Rockets as he pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits, striking out six batters, and giving up no walks. Cardenas also picked off a Rocket runner on second base.
The Tiger defense also came up with a double play from Freeman to Derek Farrera to Jacob Trevino to preserve the Tiger 3-0 victory.
On Saturday, the Tigers traveled to Kennedy High School and came away with another 5-0 shutout victory.
In the top of the second inning, Trevino hit a double and Farrell reached base on an error, before both runners came in to score on Villarreal’s two- RBI triple. In the third inning, Cardenas reached base on a walk and Farrera hit a double. Trevino came up with a two- RBI single to score both runners. The final Tiger run came in the sixth inning as Villarreal had a single and scored on Gulamhusein’s RBI single.
Farrell pitched a complete game, as he gave up three hits, no runs, and struck out 13 Rocket batters.
The Tiger defense had a big seventh inning with great plays by Farrell and Ian Rivera before Farrell struck out the final batter.
The Tigers will face Georgetown in the Area round. The three-game series will take place Saturday, May 14. Game times and venues were unavailable as of press time May 9.
